Remember to be good and kind to yourself. Taking care of yourself is the greatest gift of all to those you love.
“Self-care is never a selfish act—it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.” ~Parker Palmer

Remember the old cliché? “Take care of yourself first or you will have nothing left to give others.” Or, “we can’t give what we don’t have.” But what is self-care really? Why is it so difficult and why do we feel guilty about doing it?

We were all given this special house to live in… our own body, mind and soul. It is our responsibility to take good care of it and treat it with ultimate respect. It carries within our special gifts and talents that are uniquely ours. Self-care is about seeking and nurturing internal validation. It is finding the sweet child within and giving him or her soothing comfort, reassurance, and warm, loving thoughts and wishes. It is about taking care of the internal emotional side of our being and learning self-compassion.

As I continue my journey from stage IV cancer to embracing a lifestyle that supports my immune system and keeps me on the track of disease prevention, self care is a huge piece of the pie. Think you do not have enough time, think again. Getting well is a full time job!

Gentle ways to take care of yourself when you’re busy:

1. Say no to anything that is not important to you
2. Ask for help
3. Get enough sleep
4. Drink tea
5. Listen to your favorite music
6. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables
7. Take 5 minutes in the morning to just stretch and breathe
8. Make sure you keep in touch with your friends
9. Make room for rest
10. Surround yourself with inspiring photos
11. Spend your lunchtime as sacred you-time
12. Take a run or a long walk
13. Go to a yoga class or do a tape at home
14. Take a hot bath
15. Light candles
16. Breathe
17. Take the weekends completely off
18. Meditate in the morning
19. Use scented oils in the shower
20. Reward yourself
